Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt van Rijn, Karel Appel and Johannes Vermeer: the Netherlands has a rich history when it comes to talented painters. As a tourist, your trip is therefore not complete without a visit to one of the best art museums in the Netherlands. Whether you love the geometry of Piet Mondrian, the stylised shapes of Pablo Picasso or the colourful and world-famous paintings of Van Gogh: the Kröller-Müller Museum on the Veluwe has something for you!
What is there to see at the Kröller-Müller Museum? The Kröller-Müller was one of the first museums of modern art. Its collection of mainly 19th- and 20th-century visual art is world-renowned and consists of modern paintings and modern sculpture. This makes the Kröller-Müller a leading contemporary art museum in the Netherlands. The collection includes around 20,000 modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures, with works by great masters and iconic artists that you can admire throughout the year. You will find a large part of the collection in our online collection search tool.
Although the Randstad has some wonderful art museums, there is also plenty to see in the rest of the Netherlands. The Kröller-Müller Museum on the Veluwe is located in the middle of a beautiful and vast nature reserve: De Hoge Veluwe National Park. Here you will find forests, heathland, moors and streams to explore on foot or by bicycle. Also be sure to visit the sculpture garden: one of the largest in Europe. The garden is open all year round and exudes a different atmosphere each season. A visit to the Kröller-Müller is the perfect day out for young and old, where you combine art and nature to enjoy and completely unwind.
With almost 90 paintings and over 180 drawings, the Kröller-Müller boasts the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world. We can therefore say that the museum is Vincent van Gogh's second home: a Van Gogh museum within a modern art museum in the Netherlands. Since the museum opened in 1938, his works have hung in the heart of the building: the Van Gogh Gallery. Two of the most famous works from his Dutch period can be found here: The Potato Eaters and Terrace of a Café at Night.
Van Gogh tried several different professions, but these careers were unsuccessful. After working as an art dealer, school teacher and lay preacher, Vincent van Gogh devotes himself to becoming an artist at the age of 27. In people and nature, he seeks the spiritual dimension that he believes to be God. Helene Kröller-Müller, the museum's founder, recognises herself in this and she develops a great love for Van Gogh's work. She considers him ‘one of the great spirits of modern art’. It is thanks to her efforts that the museum has such a large and impressive painting collection today.
