Van Gogh Worldwide is a digital platform for all the scientific knowledge and information about the work of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). A high-quality platform for scholarly target groups, presented on an accessible website.
Partners
Van Gogh Worldwide is a joint initiative of three founding partners: the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History. These three founding partners possess detailed art-historical and material-technical information on Van Gogh’s work. Furthermore, they combine specialised knowledge about making information digitally available. The realization of the project is taking place with a large number of partners, including museums, research institutions and private individuals.
Website
The platform shows details of the paintings, drawings and prints, as published in Jacob Baart de la Faille’s oeuvre catalogue from 1970. The works attributed to Van Gogh since then are also included. The object data, letter references, provenance, exhibition and literature data, as well as the material-technical information on these works, is available. The platform strives for objectivity: all the published scholarly research results about the artworks is presented.
Linked data
Van Gogh Worldwide adheres to the principles and points of departure of the Dutch Digital Heritage Network and Digital Heritage Reference Architecture. This means that information is presented as Linked data: data from different sources is connected as a whole. Information about paintings and works on paper by Van Gogh is retrieved from the source systems of the participants. As such, the information is reliable and always up to date.
Project
In the initial phase (November 2017-November 2020), the project focuses on all the works by Vincent van Gogh in the Netherlands: over 300 paintings and around 900 works on paper. After that, works from the rest of the world will also be added to the platform: a total of around 2000 works by Van Gogh are currently known.
From 2021 to 2023, the goal was to connect worldwide collections to the platform. Van Gogh Worldwide has collaborated with museums all over the world to achieve this. As of October 1, Van Gogh Worldwide's maintenance department will take care of the improvement of the platform and will invite you to share any updates.
