Roe deer

In 1922, Helene commissions John Rädecker, a sculptor whose work she has been acquiring since 1918, to design a sculpture to be placed on the Veluwe estate. Unfortunately, due to the artist’s fear of failure, the completion of the sculpture is delayed until 1926. In the interim, the collaboration is even temporarily halted by Helene, but eventually she is able to place a life-sized stone Roe deer on the crossroads at St Hubertus hunting lodge.

Despite the somewhat difficult collaboration, Helene’s appreciation for the artist remains high. For example, she brings his work to the attention of other collectors, including Karl Koetschau, director of the Städtische Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf, who subsequently acquires 4 works from Rädecker.
