The first years of Evert van Straaten’s directorship are dominated by the museum’s transition to autonomy.

Van Straaten develops a new way of regarding the collection. He himself calls it ‘a spider web, with the original Kröller collection at its centre’.

Van Straaten | Historical continuity

Van Straaten invests in opening up the historical archive and in researching the collection that, among other things, is developed into successful exhibitions.

Van Straaten | Art & Life

Van Straaten invests in the future, in which the public is central. His acquisitions attest to a social approach with which he seeks to add ‘extra colour’ to the atmosphere of the museum.

Van Straaten | Utopia as guiding principle

The concept of ‘utopia’ is central to the collection policy. Despite the necessary cutbacks, Van Straaten manages to acquire a number of important works around this theme.
